Once again this year there will be a church presence at Summerfest with all the churches in the area trying to man a stall during the day. We have been asked to look after the period between 1.00 - 2.30 p.m. with Flemington Church. Ideally we would have 4 people helping to serve tea and coffee during this period. If anyone feels that they could help, please see Fr. Breslin.
Communications Sunday 2012
Communications Sunday 20th May 2012.
This is the day when Catholics are asked to reflect on the necessity of fulfilling the command of Jesus to preach the Good News of the Gospel to the whole world. A key to communicating with “the whole world” is the world of the media and its demands for news on every aspect of the life of the Church and its people.
Many thanks to all who contributed to the Special Collection for the Communications Commission. A total of £565 was raised.

Mary’s Meals Appeal 2012
Mary’s Meals work with some of the poorest people in Third World countries. We offer help by collecting unwanted/unused clothing and bedding (all textiles) and turning them into funds to carry out our work overseas. For better clothing, we receive a better price but even from rags we can raise money.
Last year, the clothing collections generated the amazing sum of approximately £73,000!! The Raffle raised over £160,000. Two black poly bags filled with textiles could generate enough funds to feed a child in Malawi for a year (approximately £7.00).
We are currently feeding over 600,000 world-wide and with your help we hope to continue expanding our feeding programme.
Please note that the van will collect after the Sunday Morning Masses on Sunday 17th June 2012 - we regret that we are unable to accept bric-a-brac and are unable to collect in the evening. We will also be selling Raffle Tickets after all the Masses this same weekend.
Day for Life 31st May, 2012 The Feast of the Visitation
The theme chosen this year to mark the Day for Life is the human body. St. Paul’s words highlight its significance, “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit … therefore glorify God in your body.” (1 Cor 6: 19-20)
Day for Life Prayer
I thank you Lord for the precious gift of my body.
Whatever its strengths or limitations;
whatever it brings me in terms of joy or suffering,
help me always to see it as your gift.
As I run the race of life, help me to have a
healthy attitude to my body and a reverence for
its part in my eternal future.
Help me to give glory to you by treating my body
and the body of others, with care and respect.
As I marvel at the wonder of all of your Creation,
may the whole human family work together to
protect creation and especially the precious gift
of human life, from conception to natural death.
Enable us by your grace to promote the
well-being and dignity of every person, serving you
and the Gospel of life in a spirit of generosity,
faith and love, through Christ Jesus Our Lord.
Amen.

Camglen Fair Trade Forum Steering Group
“Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice.
It is the protection of a fundamental human right,
the right to dignity and a decent life.”
Nelson Mandela
Rutherglen and Cambuslang - World’s 1000th Fairtrade Towns
www.camglenfairtrade.org.uk
Since the Camglen Fair Trade forum was set up four and a half years ago, we have had many successes in campaigning for a fairer deal for some of the world’s poorest people. We recognise that from initial meetings through to building relationships with schools, churches, businesses, elected representatives and the wider community, we have always benefited from enormous local support. So, on behalf of the Steering Group, we would like to offer a huge thank you to everyone who has offered their support.
We are now at the stage of looking for new members to join the Steering Group. We want to meet people who care about building a fairer world and who can attend approximately nine meetings per year. We are interested in speaking to anyone who wants to find out more. Roles include being a helper at specific events through to those of you who have an interest in media, administration and leadership roles. Ideally we are looking to invite people to apply for the position of Media Officer, Secretary and Coordinator. All of these roles will be mentored by current Steering Group members who aim to create a supportive learning environment.
Interested, but not sure about committing? Then don’t worry!!! We are keen to meet anyone who is interested for a chat/coffee and to explain things further in a relaxed manner. We are also happy to speak to people by phone or communicate via email/Skype if you prefer.
Finally, here is a wee YouTube link which explains what a Fairtrade Town involves.
If you are interested in the work of missionaries involved in Fair Trade work here is link from Fr Sean Coyle in the Philipines which shows some the Fair Trade work done by Columban Fr Shay Cullen.

The Deep End - How does your garden grow?
Have you ever seen a vine close up? I remember stopping at a French vineyard on my first ever trip abroad, fascinated to set eyes for the first time on the rows upon rows of vines, heavy with clusters of ripe grapes. If you haven’t had the good fortune to visit a vineyard, think of an apple tree laden with apples, or a fruit bush ripe for picking. Imagine the many factors that must come together so that the tree can bear fruit - the sunlight, rain, nutrients, and of course the proper pruning from a prudent gardener.
We are now some weeks into the Church season of Easter. During Lent we went through a pruning process of sorts. We cut back on areas of excess and weeded out some bad habits. What are the unhealthy habits that need to be pruned back in our lives in order that more loving thoughts and actions may emerge?
The symbolism of the vine works on many levels. A branch that is separated from the tree cannot flourish on its own; it must be connected to the vine from which it gets its nourishment. Each of us must remain firmly rooted in Jesus. And if you look again at the vine plant, often its branches are so entangled it can be hard to know where one ends and another begins. There is no way of untwisting them to locate individual branches. We note (John 15: 1-8) that Jesus did not address himself to an individual saying ‘You are the branch’; rather he spoke of branches. We are a community, and we grow together.

Vocations to Priesthood 2012
The Priest’s for Scotland Website. (www.pfs.org.uk).
The invitation to “make disciples of all the nations” is a command to each one of us. Are you thinking about becoming a priest? The site offers information and resources to help you in your process of discernment.
Also available on the website is the initiative "Dare to believe Dare to be Different" which consists of a series of videos promoting priesthood and religious life.
If you have decided that you want to train as a diocesan priest for one of the dioceses of Scotland then you must take part in the Seminary Applicants’ Year. This is a year long process of prayer and discernment that prepares applicants for entry into the seminary formation programme.
Clearly as a prospective minister in the Roman Catholic Church a suitable candidate should have a desire to serve the Church. He also needs to have a working grasp of things Catholic and be ready to embrace the vision of the Church as outlined by the Second Vatican Council and subsequent official Church documents. A suitable candidate should be generous in spirit and ready to take on the challenge involved in the seminary formation programme and in following Jesus Christ and his Church.
If you are interested in finding out more about going to seminary to study for the diocesan priesthood or if you just wish to gather with others who are thinking in a similar way you might wish to come along to our annual enquirers’ retreat which will take place this year 1st - 2nd June 2012.
How long will it take to become a priest?
Formation programmes vary enormously and can range from five to seven years depending on the nature and background of the candidate. While programmes can be tailored to the needs of the individual they generally involve the candidate receiving substantial education in philosophy and theology. Along with his intellectual formation, time also needs to be given to forming the seminarian as a pastoral minister, spiritually mature and capable to ministering in a human way.
The years of training include significant times of discernment about the vocation to priesthood. Following this time of preparation and discernment, the Bishop may call the candidate to ordination.
Who should consider becoming a priest?
It is important to say that there is no such thing as a typical priest or indeed a typical seminarian. Diocesan priests in Scotland offer a rich variety of characters, talent and interests. A suitable candidate should be single with average, or above average intelligence. He should be emotionally stable and capable of relating well to men and women. He should be in good health and be sincerely interested in serving as an ordained minister. Anyone attracted to becoming a priest should be interested in working with people and in serving God.

The Deep End - The Good Shepherd
Social media is here to stay, and a survey done in England recently has shown that more and more young people are lonely despite their hundreds of friends on social networking sites. Like this page, follow another, join this group, support this cause. The Gospel today refers to another kind of ‘following’ and emphasises the importance of relationship. The shepherd knows his flock and cares for them. They follow him and this is not a reference to Facebook or Twitter … it is a genuine relationship, not one reduced to numbers or ’likes’. Everyone matters to the Good Shepherd, regardless of their situation.
Today’s Gospel (John 10: 11-18) is asking us to follow in a more personal way. In Jesus’ time, shepherds would round up their sheep in the evening and guide them into their pen. But it had no gate and the shepherd would have to lie across the space in case the sheep were attacked in the night. The shepherds literally lay down their lives for their flock. John compares this sacrifice to the ’hired hand’ who is not really committed to the flock. He does what he has to but flees at the first sign of trouble (unfriend this person). So this Good Shepherd Sunday we use the image of the shepherd to describe Jesus, not just any shepherd but the ’genuine’ Shepherd who wants a personal relationship with each one of us and who would lay down his life for us: ’No, I don’t mean Twitter, I mean literally “follow me”.

Vocations Prayer
Gracious God, You have called me to life and gifted me in many ways. Through Baptism You have sent me to continue the mission of Jesus by sharing my love with others.
Strengthen me to respond to Your call each day.
Help me to become all You desire of me.
Inspire me to make a difference in others’ lives.
Lead me to choose the way of life You have planned for me.
Open the hearts of all to listen to Your call. Fill all with Your Holy Spirit that we may have listening hearts andthe courage to respond to You.Enkindle in my heart and the hearts of others the desire to make the world a better place by serving as Lay Minister, Sister, Priest, Brother or Deacon.
Amen.
The Deep End - Open your eyes and hearts
We hear in the Gospel today (Luke 24:35-48) the two disciples announcing to the others about how they recognised Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Think of all the times we break bread, not just at Mass, but at weddings, family meals, catch ups with old friends and so on. Jesus spent most of his earthly life at table, eating and drinking, usually with those who were considered ‘socially unacceptable’.
As we approach the Eucharistic Congress in June we must remember that the breaking of bread together is a powerful symbol. Each time we sit down at an important occasion or family meal we should remember that we are performing Eucharist. When we go about our daily work, when we help those in need of our love, our care, our listening ear, our action, we are doing Eucharist.
‘God of the Resurrection, God of the living. Untomb and uncover all that needs to live in me. Take me to people, events, and situations. And stretch me into much greater openness. For it is only then that I will grow and change. For it is only then that I will be transformed. For it is only then that I will know how it is. To be in the moment of rising from the dead.’ (Joyce Rupp)

The Deep End - Revisiting the Tomb
In the Gospel reading John 20:1-9, Mary Magdalene is faced with the tomb. Every death we experience, whether it be physical death, the death of a relationship, an addiction, financial crisis, civil strife, they all bring new life in some form eventually. This story gives hope to millions of people, that the ‘deaths’ are not a full stop, but more of a comma. That despite the suffering, heartbreak or injustice, good will triumph. Whatever our ‘death’ experiences may be, we revisit them, going to the tomb as usual. And then we realise that something has changed, the stone has rolled away.‘Life will always prevail, through all the layers of death in which we try to contain it.’ (Margaret Silf)
